The act of giving of oneself: an invaluable contribution at the heart of solidarity

Novembre 2024

The act of giving of oneself - whether through volunteering, sharing skills, or offering time—lies at the very essence of the mission of Restos du  Cœur of Belgium. It is a gesture of generosity that transcends the simple act of giving and becomes a genuine contribution to solidarity and mutual support. By bringing his or her expertise, energy, and time, each and every volunteer enables the Restos du Cœur to continue their mission of helping those in need and providing indispensable support to people facing hardship.

Volunteering at the Restos du  Cœur is much more than just a one-off commitment. It’s a response to the daily challenges involved in managing the association's activities: food collection and distribution, welcoming beneficiaries, sorting donations, stock management, and much, much more. Each person can play a crucial role according to his or her skills and availability to make sure that the 21 Restos du Cœur in Belgium are run smoothly. Whether you are a lawyer, doctor, teacher, or someone who can offer administrative help or your language skills, every contribution strengthens the support provided to beneficiaries, offering them help tailored to their needs.

Sandra’s testimonial: an inspiring commitment

Sandra, a volunteer at the Resto du Cœur in Wavre since 2019, is one of the many people who have chosen to give of themselves to support the mission of the Restos du Cœur. During a food drive at a large store, she met the President of the Resto du  Cœur in Wavre. Inspired by this encounter and moved by the impact of the initiative, she immediately wanted to get involved.

She has since then dedicated two days a week to the Resto du Cœur in Wavre. With this commitment, not only does she stay active but also has a deep sense of satisfaction at the end of each day. “You can feel that you are doing something useful, and you can really see the impact of what you are doing,” she says. Her main role is to prepare parcels for beneficiaries and manage fresh products—a vital task that helps reduce food waste.

This testimonial is an inspiring example of what giving of oneself can bring—not only direct support to those in need but also a real source of personal fulfilment for the volunteers themselves.

The Restos du Cœur of Belgium could not function without the invaluable support of its volunteers. Every minute given, every skill shared, and every act of solidarity has an immense impact. By offering their time, volunteers help build a support network that those in need can rely on. Their contribution ensures that thousands of meals are distributed each day, that stock is managed efficiently, and that aid reaches those who need it most, helping them move forward on the path out of hardship.

You, too, can be part of this chain of solidarity. Together, we can continue to nourish not only bodies but also minds, offering everyone dignity and hope for a better future.

Together, let us make giving of ourselves a driving force for change and solidarity.
