Back-to-School 2024
Contrary to popular belief, not all children receive their school supplies for free!
August 2024
Each year, thanks to the generosity of our donors, we can provide the necessary school supplies to the children of beneficiary families. In 2023, we were able to help 3,208 children start the school year with a smile, equipped with quality supplies. For these children, having the same supplies as their peers eliminates social differences and boosts their self-confidence.
Although free schooling is enshrined in the Belgian Constitution, there is still a gap between this ideal and the reality faced by many families who regularly have to spend money to cover their children's school expenses.
In Wallonia and Brussels, free school supplies are provided from kindergarten to the 3rd year of primary school. In this case, parents only need to provide an empty pencil case and satchel, tissues (for children in kindergarten), and outfits for sports and swimming activities. The school provides all the necessary supplies for classroom learning (notebooks, pencils, rulers, erasers, etc.), but not for home use. Many schools actually do not allow these supplies to leave the classroom. So, how do students do their homework at home? This issue is compounded for children who are not in classes where supplies are provided by the school. For these children, their parents bear the full cost of back-to-school supplies, which is often very burdensome, and all the more so for disadvantaged families.
Our action is therefore truly essential to ensure that all students from these families receive optimal supplies, at home as well as in school.
In Flanders, the school chooses the supplies it considers necessary to achieve the learning and development goals for primary education students. A school is not required to provide all supplies.
Having the necessary tools to learn is essential for success in school. Your support enables each child to feel included and valued, contributing to their personal and academic growth, and the fight against child and intergenerational poverty. This year, we hope to help even more children start the school year in the best possible conditions.
Every gesture counts and can make a real difference. Together, let’s make going back to school a moment of joy, solidarity, and equality for all children!
